The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released Version 2.0 of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard, a significant update to its flagship framework for assessing, validating and tracking corporate decarbonisation commitments while supporting the development of science-based climate targets.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a “best-efforts” approach. Under this framework, companies may remain compliant with the standard even if they do not fully achieve their targets, provided they can demonstrate that they have employed all available measures to reduce emissions. Companies are also expected to disclose implementation challenges and the actions taken to address them, recognising that external factors beyond their control may impact progress toward their climate goals.
