ESG reporting is very complex, with a growing number of frameworks, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), as well as the importance of understanding which ESG rankings and ratings align best to each business's requirements; examples include the DJSI, FTSE4Good, ISS, MSCI, GRESB, Sustainalytics, Newsweek Green Rankings, and CDP.

Demand for ESG reporting roles and the associated skill set has become increasingly important as more and more organisations look to produce annual sustainability reports, respond to investor requests or meet future legislation.

Alongside the value of credibly communicating their environmental, operational, and social performance, the true benefit of ESG reporting is not only to produce the report, but also to use the exercise to improve governance and programmes, thereby enhancing the benefit to sustainability as well as their ranking or rating.

Investor Relations (IR) is a good example of a role adapting to increasing levels of ESG reporting, driven by a mixture of companies organically embracing a more sustainable future and investor demand. Within IR it's about identifying risk and opportunity so that management and all stakeholders can better understand the state of – and the future of – the business. Effective ESG Reporting helps companies set goals and communicate about their findings and progress.
